Understanding GLP-1 therapy
About GLP-1 medications
Getting started with Claya
What is GLP-1 therapy?
GLP-1 therapy is treatment using medications that mimic a naturally-occurring hormone called GLP-1, which helps control your appetite and regulate your blood sugar. While GLP-1 therapy was originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, it’s now commonly used to help people lose weight by reducing hunger and helping them to feel fuller for longer.
How does GLP-1 therapy help with weight loss?
GLP-1 therapy helps with weight loss by slowing down digestion and making you feel less hungry. It also helps to regulate your blood sugar. Together, this leads to your eating less food (and fewer calories!) and experiencing steady, sustainable weight loss.
What’s the difference between GLP-1 therapy and other weight loss options?
GLP-1 medications offer a unique approach to weight loss by targeting your body’s natural hormones to regulate appetite and blood sugar. Unlike stimulant-based weight loss drugs that can cause jittery side effects, GLP-1 medications provide a more balanced solution. They are effective not only for weight loss but also for managing type 2 diabetes. Plus, they tend to support longer-term weight management, making it easier to maintain your progress over time.
How is GLP-1 therapy administered?
GLP-1 medications can be taken two ways: as a daily pill or a quick injection. The injectable option is more common right now. It’s a simple shot with a tiny needle, usually given once a week (though some, like Victoza and Saxenda, are taken daily). You can easily do it yourself on your belly, thigh, or upper arm. Oral medications are taken daily. Check out this helpful guide on giving a subcutaneous injection from the University of Michigan.

Will I need to make lifestyle changes while I’m on GLP-1 therapy?
When you’re on GLP-1 therapy, making a few simple lifestyle changes can help you get the most out of the medication. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and following the advice of your doctor and your care coach are all key. GLP-1 therapy is a great tool, but it’s only part of the bigger picture. Choosing healthier foods, staying active, and maintaining a good sleep routine can make a big difference in how you feel.
How long does it take to see results?
Results vary for everyone, but many people notice weight loss within the first few weeks of starting the medication, especially when combined with healthy eating and regular exercise.
Can GLP-1 therapy be combined with other medications?
Yes, GLP-1 therapy can often be combined with medications for conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. However, there are some medications or health conditions that may not be a good fit for GLP-1 therapy — so it’s vital to keep your provider in the loop about any changes to your medications. That way, they can make sure everything is working well together and adjust as needed.
Can there be interactions with other medications or medical conditions?
Yes, GLP-1 therapy can interact with certain medications or medical conditions. That’s why it’s essential to tell your weight loss provider not just what prescriptions you’re taking, but also any supplements, herbal remedies, or over-the-counter medications. It’s also important to keep your regular doctor in the loop if you start GLP-1 therapy, so they can avoid prescribing anything that may not be safe while you’re taking GLP-1 medication.
Is GLP-1 therapy right for me?
GLP-1 therapy might be a good option if you’ve found it challenging to lose weight with just diet and exercise, or if you have health conditions related to your weight. Your provider will review your health history and work with you to decide if GLP-1 therapy is the right choice for your needs.
What is a branded GLP-1 medication?
Branded GLP-1 medications are advanced treatments for managing weight and blood sugar levels. Marketed under well-known brand names like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Saxenda (which is why we refer to them as “branded”), these drugs are designed by leading pharmaceutical companies to help manage both blood sugar levels and weight. They work by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which naturally helps regulate insulin, slow down digestion, and control your appetite.
Some branded GLP-1s, like Ozempic and Mounjaro, are primarily approved for type 2 diabetes, while others like Wegovy and Saxenda are specifically made for weight loss. Medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro can also be prescribed off-label for weight loss if your provider thinks they’re the best option for you. Most of these medications come in easy-to-use injectable pens, making them convenient and effective for daily use.
What do I do if there is a shortage of my branded medication?
If your GLP-1 medication is out of stock, don’t worry—there are a few options. First, if your usual dose isn’t available, we may not be able to switch to a higher dose, but we can help. One option is to have our team submit a Prior Authorization for a different GLP-1 medication that your insurance might cover. You can also talk to your provider about trying a compound medication. If your current dose is still in stock, your provider can refill that for you.
What is a compounded GLP-1 medication?
Drug compounding is when ingredients are mixed or adjusted to create a medication that’s personalized for a specific patient, and a compounded GLP-1 medication is specially customized to meet your unique needs. Instead of using a standard, off-the-shelf drug, compounding allows pharmacists to adjust the ingredients or combine medications to create a treatment that’s tailored just for you.
This can be especially helpful when the standard dose or formulation doesn’t quite fit what you need. While these medications aren’t technically FDA-approved because they’re custom formulated, their active components are, and we take great care to ensure they’re made with high-quality ingredients and go through rigorous testing. It’s all about providing a more personalized approach to your health journey.
Do I need to have diabetes to take GLP-1 medications?
No. While GLP-1 medications were initially intended to treat type 2 diabetes, they are also FDA-approved for weight loss in people both with and without diabetes.
How long will I need to take GLP-1 medications?
The length of time you’ll need to use GLP-1 medications depends on your individual weight loss goals and health needs. Some people may use the medication long-term to maintain their results, while others might take it until they reach their target weight and then shift to managing their weight through diet and lifestyle changes. Your provider and care coach will work with you to tailor a plan that best suits your needs and long-term goals.
Can there be interactions with other medications or medical conditions?
Yes, GLP-1 therapy can interact with other medications, which is why it’s crucial to share a complete list of all your meds and supplements with your Claya provider. It’s also important to let your regular healthcare providers know if you start GLP-1 therapy, so they don’t prescribe anything that might not mix well with it.
