We need to talk…about compounded GLP-1s
If you’ve been partnering with Claya, you already know how powerful it can be to share your experience with GLP-1s. You’re not here as a spokesperson or a spokesperson-in-training — you’re here because you’ve lived it. And your story has already made a difference.
That said, things are shifting fast in the world of weight loss medications — especially when it comes to compounded versions of tirzepatide and semaglutide. And while we still want you to speak honestly and authentically, we also want to make sure you don’t accidentally step into legally risky territory.
This guide is here to help you feel confident about what you’re saying and why it matters. No lectures, no scare tactics — just clear, straightforward guidance to keep you safe and make sure your story can keep helping others.
What changed — and why it matters
Back when tirzepatide was on the FDA’s drug shortage list, compounded versions were pretty easy to get. As long as you had a prescription, that was usually enough — no need to prove you’d tried the brand name first or explain why you needed a different version.
But now tirzepatide is off the shortage list, which means doctors have to follow stricter rules to prescribe the compounded form. It’s not just about saving money anymore — there needs to be a clear medical reason, and “it’s cheaper” isn’t good enough anymore.
What happened with the lawsuit
You may have heard there was a lawsuit involving compounded tirzepatide — and it’s part of why everyone’s being a lot more careful right now.
Eli Lilly, the company that makes Mounjaro and Zepbound, recently sued a compounding pharmacy. Their claim? That the pharmacy used Lilly’s clinical trial data to promote its own compounded version of tirzepatide, and made it sound like their version was basically interchangeable with the brand names.
The lawsuit says that this company:
- Acted like their compounded version was just as safe and effective as the FDA-approved one (and because compounded meds don’t go through clinical trials, this is a legal no-no)
- Used clinical trial data from Mounjaro and Zepbound to promote their own product (even though they all have the same active ingredient, the compounded version hasn’t been through clinical trials itself)
- Marketed their product as “customized” or “personalized,” even when it wasn’t really made differently for each person (it’s the pharmacy’s own version, but it’s not tailored to the individual)
And this means that we need to be careful how we talk about compounded medications so that we don’t get caught in the crossfire.
The good news? You don’t have to memorize a bunch of legal fine print. We’ve broken it down into clear, simple dos and don’ts — so you can keep sharing your story, without stepping into something risky.
So what can you say?
What’s definitely safe:
- Talk about your personal experience: how it’s going, what you’ve noticed, how it’s helped.
- Share how much weight you’ve lost, how your appetite has changed, or what’s surprised you most.
- Mention that you’re on tirzepatide — or even that you’re using a compounded version, as long as you’re not comparing it to the name brands.
- Talk about the process of getting started through Claya — the consult, the support, whatever stood out to you.
- Share that your doctor prescribed a compounded version because it made sense for your situation (but don’t say it was just because of price).
- Mention things like easier dose adjustments or fewer side effects — as long as it’s clearly about your experience.
- Talk about how Claya’s support made the process smoother, if that was true for you.
Want to be extra safe? Add a quick line like “This is just my experience — talk to your doctor for medical advice.”
What you should probably avoid
These aren’t flat-out illegal, but they could land you — or us — in hot water if someone’s looking closely. Some of them are just worded in ways that send the wrong message, even if you meant something totally innocent.
- “Same results as Mounjaro or Wegovy.”
The problem: You’re probably just excited that it’s working — but if it’s not the FDA-approved version, you can’t suggest it performs the same way. - “Clinically proven.”
The problem: Compounded meds haven’t been through clinical trials. That phrase only applies to the brand names. - “It’s customized for me.”
The problem: Unless the pharmacy is literally creating a one-of-a-kind formula for you (which is rare), it’s not truly customized — even if your doctor chose it for you. - “It’s FDA-approved.”
The problem: Compounded meds are legal with a prescription, but they’re not FDA-approved — and that’s a legal distinction that matters. - “It’s the same thing, just cheaper.”
The problem: It might have the same active ingredient, but legally and clinically, it’s not considered the same. - “Anybody can get this through Claya.”
The problem: A doctor has to evaluate whether compounded meds make sense for someone’s specific situation. It’s not automatic.
We’ll show you better ways to say all this in a minute.
What you absolutely, positively, definitely cannot say
These are the real legal landmines — the things that, if you say them, could get Claya (or you) in serious trouble. So just… don’t.
- “This is FDA-approved.”
Nope. Compounded meds aren’t FDA-approved — even if they’re legal with a prescription. - “It’s the same as Mounjaro/Zepbound/Ozempic/Wegovy.”
It’s not. Even if it has the same active ingredient, that doesn’t make it the same product — legally or clinically. - “This is clinically proven.”
Only the brand-name versions have gone through clinical trials. That data doesn’t apply to compounded meds, and we can’t suggest otherwise. - “It’s proven safe and effective.”
You might’ve had great results, but that doesn’t make it a blanket statement. Leave the medical claims to the people with the licenses. - “You don’t need the brand name — just get the compounded version.”
That’s a treatment decision for a doctor, not something to recommend on social. - “Anyone can get this online.”
Nope. A doctor has to review your health history and determine if it’s appropriate.
If you’re ever in doubt, ask us first. We’re here to help you keep telling your story — just without the legal headaches.
Quick fixes: What to say instead
DON’T say this: | Say something like this instead: |
“FDA-approved” | “It’s not FDA-approved, but your doctor can prescribe it if he thinks it’s the best fit for you.” |
“It’s clinically proven” | “It hasn’t been through clinical trials like the brand name drugs — but it’s worked for me.” |
“It’s proven safe and effective” | “So far, it’s been a great fit for me — and your doctor can help figure out if it’s right for you too.” |
“Same results as Mounjaro or Wegovy” | “I’ve had amazing results — but that’s just my personal experience.” |
“Basically the same as Mounjaro” | “It has the same active ingredient, but it’s not the same product.” |
“It works just like the brand names” | “It’s working well for me, even though it hasn’t gone through the same kind of testing as the brand names.” |
“It’s the same thing, just cheaper” | “It’s cheaper and has the same ingredient, but your doctor has to show it’s medically necessary — it’s not just a swap.” |
“This is the same med, it just costs less” | “It’s what my doctor prescribed for me, and it’s more affordable — but it’s not identical to the brand names.” |
“It’s better than Mounjaro — and cheaper too” | “This has worked better for me, and the lower price definitely helps.” |
“You don’t need Mounjaro — just get this” | “This is what I’m using, but everyone’s different. Your doctor can help you figure out the right fit.” |
“You don’t need a doctor, Claya handles it” | “The doctor’s appointment, the prescription — it all happens online through Claya.” |
“Anyone can get this online” | “You do everything online through Claya — and if a doctor thinks it’s right for you, they can prescribe it.” |
“Anybody can get this through Claya” | “Claya makes it easy to get started, but it still has to go through a doctor — it’s not automatic.” |
“You can skip the hassle and just get this” | “This route was simple for me, but I still had to go through a doctor like everyone else.” |
“Custom-made just for me” | “My doctor chose a version that made sense for what I needed.” |
“It’s the exact same drug as what’s in Zepbound” | “It’s the same active ingredient, but it’s not the same product And it’s not FDA-approved.” |
The bottom line: you don’t have to censor yourself — just stay honest, keep it personal, and don’t make claims you wouldn’t want to defend in court. When in doubt, keep it simple and stick to your story.
Relax — you’ve got this
Your story matters — and the way you tell it can help someone else take the first step toward change. That’s powerful. We’re not asking you to be cautious for the sake of rules. We’re asking because we want you (and us) to stay in this space for the long haul.
You don’t have to memorize every technical detail or walk on eggshells. You just have to be real. Share what’s helped you. Be clear that everyone’s journey is different. And when in doubt, ask — we’re here to make sure you can keep sharing your story without the stress.
