What is oral semaglutide?
Oral semaglutide is a prescription medication that can make it easier for people to lose weight. It works by mimicking one of your naturally-occurring hormones called GLP-1, which helps to regulate your blood sugar, your appetite, and digestion. When you take oral semaglutide for weight loss, it tells your brain that you’re full, reduces food cravings, and helps you simply eat less — effortlessly.
When taken as directed, oral semaglutide can:
- Reduce your appetite. Since you feel fuller for longer, you’ll decrease the amount of food you eat — and you won’t miss it.
- Slow down digestion. This also contributes to feelings of fullness and satisfaction, and helps curb food cravings.
- Regulate blood sugar. Even if you don’t have diabetes, regulating blood sugar helps avoid issues like that mid-morning crash or afternoon hunger pangs.
In clinical trials, the typical person lost about 15% of their total body weight while taking semaglutide, and about 12% more weight than people who didn’t take the medication.

About oral semaglutide
Who can use oral semaglutide?
Safety and side effects
What to expect when you’re taking oral semaglutide
Daily life with oral semaglutide
What is oral semaglutide and how does it work?
Semaglutide is a type of drug known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and in its oral for is marketed under the brand name Rybelsus. It was originally developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, but is also effective in helping people without diabetes to lose weight.
Oral semaglutide works by mimicking the action of a naturally-occurring hormone which helps regulate your appetite. It reduces your appetite, slows down digestion and emptying of your stomach, and increases your feelings of fullness and satisfaction. This means you eat less, without depriving yourself and without counting calories.
What are the benefits of oral semaglutide?
The benefits of using oral semaglutide go beyond weight loss. Oral semaglutide improves blood sugar control for people with diabetes. It can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke for people who are overweight or obese, and improve cholesterol numbers.
How does oral semaglutide help with hunger?
Because it slows down digestion and emptying of your stomach, you feel less hungry less often with oral semaglutide.
How does oral semaglutide help with weight loss?
Because semaglutide slows down emptying of the stomach, you naturally eat less, which leads to weight loss.
Does oral semaglutide work for everyone?
Oral semaglutide is effective for most people, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. The amount of weight lost can vary; while many people will experience significant weight loss, others may have more moderate results. In clinical trials, people taking semaglutide lost an average of 15-20% of their total body weight.
Is oral semaglutide safe for older adults?
In general, yes. Oral semaglutide can be prescribed for older adults. Discuss your overall health and current medications with your doctor to ensure that it’s safe for you.
Can children or teenagers take oral semaglutide?
No. Semaglutide in any form is not currently approved for use by children or adolescents, and is only prescribed to adults.
Can I take oral semaglutide if I’m pregnant or considering becoming pregnant?
No. Semaglutide in any form is not recommended for people who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant in the near future.
Can I take oral semaglutide if I’ve struggled with weight loss in the past?
Absolutely! If you’ve struggled to lose weight in the past, have a history of “failed” diets, can’t keep the weight off through diet and exercise alone, etc., oral semaglutide can help. It directly targets your body’s appetite regulation system, which is a completely different mechanism than non-medical weight loss options.
Can I take oral semaglutide if I have a history of heart disease?
Probably — but make sure your provider is aware of your history. Semaglutide does have potential cardiovascular benefits for people with type 2 diabetes, and may well be beneficial for people with a history of heart disease. However, each person’s history is unique, so be sure to discuss your own history with your provider and let them guide you.
Can I take oral semaglutide if I have a history or thyroid or endocrine problems?
If you have a history of thyroid or endocrine issues, make sure to discuss your history with your provider. Semaglutide is contraindicated for people with a personal or family history of certain types of thyroid cancer, or people with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Can I take oral semaglutide if I have type 2 diabetes?
Yes. Semaglutide was initially prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, so people with diabetes will not only benefit from its weight loss component but also from its ability to improve blood sugar control. If you’re already taking diabetes medication, make sure your provider knows this.
Is oral semaglutide safe?
Yes. Semaglutide was FDA-approved for treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2017 and for weight management in 2021. As part of the approval process, it underwent rigorous safety testing and was deemed safe and effective.
Does it have any side effects?
Like all drugs, some people taking oral semaglutide may experience side effects. However, for most people these side effects are mild and improve over time. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue, with nausea being the most common complaint. Other side effects can include vomiting, headache, and dizziness. In very rare cases, people taking oral semaglutide may experience more serious issues (see important safety information [this will be a link to other content]), but for most people side effects are mild and subside after they have been taking the medication for some time.
What should I do if I experience nausea while using oral semaglutide?
Nausea is not uncommon when you first start taking the medication. Try eating smaller meals and eating more frequently, and avoiding fatty foods. If your nausea lasts for an extended period of time or is severe, contact your provider and let them know.
Can oral semaglutide affect my blood sugar even if I don’t have diabetes?
Semaglutide can affect blood sugar levels even in people who don’t have diabetes, but the effect is usually minor and does not cause any problems. If you have a history of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), however, or if you’re taking other medications that might affect your blood sugar, you should monitor your blood sugar closely and let your provider know before you start taking the medication.
Can oral semaglutide affect my digestion or gut health?
Semaglutide works by slowing down digestion and the emptying of your stomach, which is how it helps you feel fuller longer. For some people, this can result in mild digestive symptoms such as nausea, constipation, or bloating. For most people who do experience these disturbances, the symptoms are mild and subside over time.
Can I take oral semaglutide long term?
Yes. Current studies indicate that oral semaglutide is safe for long-term use.
Will oral semaglutide interact with other medications?
Semaglutide may interact with certain medications, especially those that affect your blood sugar levels or gastrointestinal function, so it’s important to make sure your provider is aware of all medications you are currently taking.
Is oral semaglutide addictive?
No. Oral semaglutide is not addictive or habit-forming.
Can I keep taking it if I’m experiencing side effects?
Mild side effects are common during the early phase of your medical weight loss journey, and they usually disappear over time as your body adapts. If your side effects are severe, however, or if they don’t subside after and adjustment period even if they’re not severe, your provider may need to adjust your dosage or make other changes to your treatment.
What if I want to stop taking oral semaglutide?
If you’re thinking of stopping oral semaglutide, it’s important to talk to your provider first. They can help guide you through the process and help you create a plan for maintaining the weight loss you’ve achieved.
How quickly can I expect to see results?
Most people begin to see weight loss within the first few weeks of taking oral semaglutide, and substantial weight loss within the first 6 months.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Individual results may vary, but in clinical trials, the average weight loss was 15-20% or total body weight.
Is there an adjustment period after starting my oral semaglutide?
There can be. Some people experience mild side effects when they start oral semaglutide, so your provider may start you out at a low dose and increase it over time.
How long will I need to keep taking it?
That depends on a variety of factors. Some people only take oral semaglutide for a limited time, while others need to take it long term in order to maintain their weight loss.
Will I regain the weight I lost if I stop taking it?
That depends. Oral semaglutide inhibits your appetite and the emptying of your stomach, naturally reducing the amount of food you eat and the calories you consume and resulting in weight loss. To sustain this weight loss without the aid of medication requires making lifestyle changes that some people may find difficult to maintain.
How often will I need to check in while I’m on the medication?
You will typically check in with your care coach every two weeks.
Can oral semaglutide be used together with other weight loss medications?
In most cases, oral semaglutide is used alone.
Can oral semaglutide help me maintain my weight long term?
Absolutely! Oral semaglutide can be a valuable part of your long-term weight maintenance strategy.
Do I need to make lifestyle changes to benefit from taking oral semaglutide?
While oral semaglutide alone can effect weight loss, making healthy lifestyle choices can both increase its effectiveness and make it easier to maintain your weight loss if you ever decide to stop treatment. Our medical weight loss coaching program is designed to help you make lifestyle choices and changes that support your weight loss journey to the fullest.
Can oral semaglutide affect my mental health?
Oral semaglutide itself doesn’t affect mental health in any way, but sudden weight loss — like any other dramatic physical change — can certainly influence your mood.
Will oral semaglutide make me feel less energetic?
Most people actually experience the opposite. As you lose weight and improve your overall health, you will probably find that your energy level increases rather than decreases.
Will oral semaglutide affect my sleep pattern or quality of sleep?
There is no evidence that oral semaglutide itself affects sleep in any way. But as with your energy level, as the weight comes off and your health improves you may also find that the quality of your sleep also improves.
Do I need to follow a specific diet while taking oral semaglutide?
No. There is no specific diet people using oral semaglutide need to follow, though making healthy changes to your eating habits may make it easier to lose weight and maintain your weight once you reach your goal.
Are there any foods I should avoid while taking oral semaglutide?
No. There is no evidence that oral semaglutide interacts with any specific foods, though people do sometimes find that avoiding fatty foods helps minimize any side effects they may be experiencing during the early phase of treatment.
Do need to change my workout routine while I’m taking oral semaglutide?
No. There’s no reason to adjust your workout routine or schedule just because you’re taking oral semaglutide, though starting an exercise program if you haven’t already can improve your overall health and maximize your weight loss results.
Can I still enjoy eating out while I’m taking oral semaglutide?
You most certainly can. oral semaglutide makes you feel fuller faster, and helps you stay feeling full longer, so you may find yourself eating smaller portions that you were before. Don’t feel like you have to clean your plate — ask for a doggie bag instead.
Can I drink alcohol while I’m taking oral semaglutide?
A little alcohol is fine while you’re taking oral semaglutide; just do it in moderation. Excessive alcohol can not only increase the risk of side effects, it can also interfere with your weight loss.
